Why Does My Car Die In The Winter?

If you’ve ever tried to start your car on a freezing winter morning and it just won’t start? You’re not alone! Cold weather can be tough on cars, and there are a few common reasons why your car might die in the winter.

1. Your Battery Doesn’t Like the Cold

Car Batteries work by creating a chemical reaction to produce electricity. In cold weather, this reaction slows down, making it harder for your battery to provide enough power to start your engine.

2. Thick Engine Oil

When it’s cold, your Engine Oil gets thicker, which makes it harder for your Engine to turn over. This means your starter and battery have to work extra hard to get your car running.

3. Moisture in the Fuel Lines

In winter, moisture can build up in your fuel lines and freeze, especially if your Gas Tank is running low. Frozen fuel lines prevent gas from getting to your Engine, which can stop your car from starting.

4. Alternator Trouble

Your Alternator charges your Battery while you drive, but if it’s not working properly, your Battery might not have enough power to start the car in cold weather. Winter puts extra stress on electrical systems, like your headlights, heater, and defroster, which can make the problem worse.

5. Frozen Parts

Extreme cold can cause other parts of your car to freeze, like the starter motor or even the Fuel Pump. When these parts don’t work, your car won’t start.

If your car dies in the winter, try these quick steps:

  • Check the Battery: Look for corrosion on the terminals and clean them if needed.
  • Jumpstart the Car: Use jumper cables or a portable jump starter to get your car running.
  • Warm It Up: If you can, move your car to a warmer spot like a garage or use a block heater to warm up the Engine.

Winter doesn’t have to mean car trouble. If you have any questions on why your Car Battery Dies in the winter and need tips on how to prevent this from happening, give us a call at (215) 736-8888 to speak to one of our Service Advisors. Stay warm, and happy driving!
